129 Bogwid

Exposition

<horrible shriek followed by hissing of vapours>

            “See how it recoils when young Julien casts Frostbite upon it? Now Julien, please go ahead and use Ignition.”

<flame gout>

            “There, you see! It recoils from the fire, but the aggression, the retaliation, the pure hostility that followed Frostbite, it does not react with the same fury. It’s just regular mad. Julien! Try Electri-

            “No that’s quite all right Julien. Professor Fimen, I get your point. The creatures dislike the cold. What’s the point to it?”

            “No Mr. Mayor, you don’t get my point. You see, they like other creatures respond to the harm elemental magics usually cause, but their reaction to the cold is different. More pronounced, more… bellicose. They hate it you see. They hate the cold so much it makes the more aggressive.”

            “So Professor, then what is your point?”

            “We should ensure the villagers do not enter the marsh after the first frost, until the snow melts and the ground is warm enough to plant.”

            “That’s… your plan, your advise, is to ask the populace not to enter the marsh over the winter and half of the spring? That’s nearly 5 months! All because you’re afraid of these little toadapuses? I hardly think such –“

            The mayor stopped short as the Professor stepped aside to reveal a cold metal table with a young mans corpse upon it. Their death was evident from the massive hole in their chest.

            “That was Titus, one of my other apprentices. One of the Bogwids got him. Out of his chest sprung three more, fully grown after only a week. If they did this in the fall when their hostility has not yet been peaked by the coming frost, imagine how aggressive they will be come the winter.”

            The mayor swallowed hard and rocked back on their heels a few times until what the professor was saying began to sink in.

            “Can…can we not get rid of them somehow? Hire an adventurer to Moonburst the marsh? Or something of the like?”

            “Perhaps, but until we have an adventurer with such power I suggest you levy a rigid warning to the populace. Perhaps we can cull their population in the summer. Put a bounty on them, but only in groups. They are cunning. Ambush predators.””

            “Right, stern warning. Consequences even, I’d say.” The mayor replied, mostly to himself as he turned to head out Professor Fimen’s classroom already formulating the announcement in his mind.
